This month, we introduce Charlotte Clode, Partner at FBC Manby Bowdler LLP, and the Modern Law Awards Lawyer of the Year 2020. Charlotte tells us about the award ceremony, her focus on business development, and her appreciation for LawNet's work in supporting the legal industry.
With a particular bias towards Commercial and Contractual Disputes, Charlotte handles FBC Manby Bowdler's Intellectual Property, Technology & Media Law Group's IP litigation at Partner level and manages a portfolio of IT, software and development companies. She is also the firm's Training Principal, responsible for the intake and supervision of trainee solicitors who are taken on via apprenticeships, training contracts and the firm’s CILEx to solicitor programmes.
Since her time as a junior lawyer at FBC Manby Bowdler (‘FBCMB‘) Charlotte has made great efforts to ensure that business development is part of her role. Over the years, she has successfully establishe a strong profile as a business presence and commercial lawyer in the region.
"I have always had a passion for business, including training and development." As Training Principal, Charlotte is now able to help shape the firm's future. "I take my role very seriously, and try to make sure that I help those lawyers coming up in their careers behind me to reach their full potential."
In February 2020, Charlotte was recognised as Lawyer of the Year at the Modern Law Awards 2020 for her outstanding contribution to the development of FBCMB through her leadership and management. On top of that, she is the current holder of the Professional of the Year title from Wolverhampton Law Society and has been noted as a "Next Generation" lawyer by the leading guide for lawyers, the Legal 500, two years in a row.
Her colleague and FBCMB’s former Managing Partner Kim Carr, pays tribute to Charlotte's outstanding contribution to the development of the firm. "Charlotte is a standout lawyer, both for her legal expertise and the contributions she has made to the success of FBC Manby Bowdler and, most notably, in the development of an accessible and innovative training programme."
Kim further explains, "Charlotte's strong management and leadership skills, a desire to succeed at every level, with a focus on collaboration, teamwork, learning and development and client experience make her a truly exceptional lawyer."
Together with her good friend and colleague Laura Jones, FBCMB’s Head of Client Experience Sales & Marketing, Charlotte attended the Modern Law Awards ceremony in Manchester. "We had the pleasure of sharing a table with our friends from LawNet, who had also been nominated for an award," Charlotte tells us. "My category was fourth to be announced. Because it was such a strong category, I didn't dare hope to win. Therefore, it was a huge surprise when my name was called out."
She adds, "winning on a national scale is a great thing for me and the firm as it demonstrates that lawyers working outside of big city firms can carve out impactful careers if they work hard and choose to make a difference."
Charlotte also congratulates LawNet, who was named winner of the Supporting the Industry Modern Law Awards 2020.
"We have worked closely with LawNet for many years and credit a lot of the innovation we have brought into our business to the opportunities that LawNet has presented us with. "
"I was really pleased to be there to celebrate with them. For me, and for the work they do to support the UK legal profession, they were the obvious winners in their category."
Fun fact: English football player Steve McManaman (FC Liverpool and Real Madrid) attended Charlotte's graduation ceremony!
