At Monolith, Sergio Elias-Wilson contributes to the firm's diverse practice, bringing his expertise as a US-trained lawyer specializing in General Corporate law, Web3, and Blockchain Technology. Having called Tokyo home for over a decade, Sergio has developed a deep appreciation for Japanese culture. "This country is a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation," he reflects. "The pristine environment and societal order are captivating. While I still enjoy playing baseball, a reminder of my roots, I have found it remarkably easy to embrace local customs. Life here offers a unique, refreshing pace—different, but in the most positive way."
A Name with a Vision – a Culture of Innovation
Lucas Slobodticov, a foreign associate from Sao Paolo, tells us that the law firm was founded in 2017 by Toki Kawase, an IT engineer turned lawyer. Toki chose Monolith's name drawing inspiration from the movie "Space Odyssey 2001", expressing the firm’s mission to catalyze human evolution through technology and their aspiration to reach the mountain top of legal excellence. The innovative name totally breaks away from traditional Japanese conventions and truly sets the tone for Monolith's disruptive presence in the legal market.
Likewise, Monolith's approach to work culture is as revolutionary as its name. In a country where traditional law firms maintain strict dress codes and rigid office layouts, Monolith prefers a relaxed atmosphere with no dress codes and an open, inviting office environment. Remote work is not just accepted but encouraged. Lucas and Sergio are smiling broadly when they tell us that at networking events, they are usually the only lawyers not wearing suits. Also, while the Japanese practice of exchanging business cards (Meishi culture) is still important, Monolith adapts to more modern practices like exchanging contacts via Instagram and LinkedIn.

In fact, this progressive setup seems to resonate really well with foreign investors and start-ups: Monolith's client profile mainly consists of start-ups and companies in the IT sector. The firm offers a one-stop-shop experience for their clients and focuses on a result-driven approach, while aiming to build sustainable relationships as a trusted advisor. Lucas points out that it takes time until a client trusts you, and how this can only be achieved by quality work and a respectful interaction. “What has struck me most about Japan is the respect and kindness that people show towards their co-workers – respect in a truly meaningful way. At Monolith, we are successfully building long-term relationships between clients and colleagues, and there is space for many more.”
