This month’s issue takes us to Montreal. We talked to Jordane Crispel, partner at Lecours, Hébert Lawyers Inc., to learn what has changed within the multi-national Canadian Law Firm.
In early 2017, Mr Alain Lecours handed key responsibilities to his partners Quentin Leclercq and Jordane Crispel. With Jordane Crispel and Quentin Leclercq being members of both the Quebec’s Bar and the Paris Bar, the firm is highly active in Canada and France. The two partners have received training on both sides of the Atlantic:
After completing her law studies, Mrs Crispel earned a master’s degree in business and tax law from Université Paris II (Panthéon-Assas) and an advanced master’s degree in contractual and property law from Université Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne). She also finished a master degree in Common Law at the University of Montreal.
Mr Leclercq attained a master’s degree in business law in France and has a civil law degree from the University of Montreal. Before moving to Canada, he worked at an intellectual property law firm, as well as an in-house legal counsel within the fashion industry. Making use of his then gained experience, he published a book entitled ‘The Fashion Industry: Behind the scenes’.
Now, Mr Alain Lecours is acting as avocat of-counsel, focusing on mediation, and other methods of alternative dispute resolution.
One speciality of Jordane Crispel is Wills & Estate Settlements. Because of the significant number of French citizens coming to Quebec, she is handling various inheritance cases between the two countries. She explains, ‘When it comes to the content and beneficiary of a will, Quebec law is far more liberal compared to France. It is possible, for example, to ban your children from the will.’ An interesting fact for some seeking to relocate.
As a trademark agent the firm offers research and analysis for a proposed trademark, and protection against dilution and infringement at an international level. In Corporate and Commercial Law, the dual legal training of both partners makes them well-positioned to assist clients in trans-national cases.
Right now, the firm is working on an ambitious project: the current one-way assistance for companies seeking to relocate to Quebec shall be extended to business immigration on both sides. Looking ahead, Lecours, Hébert Lawyers Inc is planning the launch of a representation office in France in 2019, which will bring them closer to their clients.
